Instructions and Breakdown of the Scoring
 
 
 

Wines can score an overall maximum possible of 20 pts summed from the categories below. Judges are instructed to start each wine with maximal possible points and work backwards. Each wine is to be judged as objectively as possible from what is tasted at that exact moment. "X-factors" like ageability and subjective appeal factor only into the last category of overall impression. 
 
 
Appearance  - 2pts possible
 
1 - Excellent                          ---> Brilliant, with excellent color
0 - Failure                             ---> Cloudy/off color (rare - a light color is not a fault)
 
 
Aroma and Bouquet - 6 pts possible
 
6 - Extraordinary                    --->  Unmistakable and persistent aromas of grape variety or wine type. Outstanding in complexity and balance. Compelling.
5 - Excellent                          --->  Complex bouquet, well-balanced.
4 - Good                               --->  Nice characteristic and distinguishable aroma.
3 - Acceptable                       --->  Slight aroma. Pleasant.
2 - Deficient                          --->  No perceptiable aromas or slight off aromas
1 - Poor                                --->  Off-odors predominant
0 - Failure                             --->  Objectionable or offensive aromas
 
 
 
Taste and Texture - 6 pts possible
 
6 - Extraordinary                    --->  Unmistakable and persistent flavors. Extraordinary balance. Smooth, full bodied and/or overwhelming quality.
5 - Excellent                          --->  All of the above with less intensity. Not overwhelming. Slight imbalance.
4 - Good                               --->  Characteristic grape variety or wine type flavor. OK balance. Smooth. May have minor imperfections.
3 - Acceptable                       --->  Undistinguished wine but pleasant. May have minor off flavors.  Out of balance and/or somewhat thin or rough.
2 - Deficient                          --->  Undistinguished wine with more pronounced faults than above.
1 - Poor                                --->  Disagreeable flavors. Poorly balanced and/or unpleasant texture.
0 - Failure                             --->  Objectionable or offensive flavors and/or texture.
 
 
Aftertaste and Finish - 3 pts possible
 
3 - Excellent                         --->  Lingering outstanding and enjoyable aftertaste/finish.
2 - Good                              --->  Pleasant aftertaste
1 - Poor                               --->  Little or no distinguishable aftertaste
0 - Failure                            --->  Unpleasant aftertaste
 
Overall Impression - 4 pts possible
 
4 - Extraordinary                   ---> I want to buy a case!
3 - Excellent                         ---> I want to buy a bottle.
2 - Good                              ---> I'll take a glass
1 - Fair                                ---> if someone else were buying ...
0 - Poor                               ---> Got any beer?
 
 
 
 
 
 

 
 
After completing the scoring for all wines in a flight, a discussion occurs after which each judge ranks the wines within the flight.
